If you want to get out of debt, here’s what you need to change

EVERY day, I meet with a lot of people who are sick and tired of being in a financial mess but they are unwilling to pay the price of being debt-free. What do I mean by this? In this week’s article, I will tell you exactly what needs to change in order for you to find the financial peace that you may be longing for so badly.
The first change that must happen is inside your head. You can only change your life if you change your thinking. Becoming financially free will remain nothing but a dream for you until you make up your mind that you will no longer live the way you’ve been living. You need a new mindset about how to handle your finances. Insanity has been defined as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”.  If you are caught in a vicious cycle of borrowing and you know that this is burying you in a deeper financial hole every single month, then why do you continue to borrow month after month? Racking up debts with no plan on how to pay it all back is insanity.  Stop the insanity!  You can’t get out of debt by accumulating more debt. I know this sounds simple but you’ll be surprised how many people find themselves in this situation, and they simply can’t get out.
The second change that is necessary for your financial situation to turn around is in your financial behavior. We may not always admit it but we all have bad behaviors that cause all kinds of problems in our lives. But here, I am specifically talking about the bad financial behaviors you may have when it comes to handling your money. For example, this week, I was talking to someone who confessed to me that she was addicted to shopping for things she doesn’t even really need and she just doesn’t know how to stop. She spends hours at the mall most of the time and at the end of the month, she feels terrible when she gets her credit card bill.  Last year, one of her New Year’s resolutions was to pay down or pay off most of her credit cards but just last month, she compared the total balances on all her credit cards and realized that instead of the balances going down, they’ve actually gone up from last year!
In order to be free from debt, you need to take 100% responsibility for changing the financial course of your life. Only you can decide your future. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you will remain stuck where you are and you will just hate yourself later and regret the consequences of your action- or inaction.
If you are experiencing debt problems, you can’t put your head under the pillow and pretend that things will somehow just work themselves out.  They won’t. That is the reality you need to face and until you do, don’t expect your life to get any better. I know that this sounds harsh but sometimes this is the wake-up call that people need to get out of what I call a “money coma”.
