Most of my clients know that they should pay attention to their finances, especially debt problems that won’t just go away. They know they need to get help and that if they don’t do anything about their situation, things are bound to get worse. They could be facing foreclosure, have an imminent wage garnishment or maybe they’re slowly depleting their savings and their assets while trying to dig themselves out of the financial hole that they’re in.
Over the years, I’ve always wondered: “Why don’t these people take immediate action to protect themselves so that they can improve their situation?” In my 15 years of experience as a bankruptcy attorney, I have seen a lot of clients who just won’t do anything until they’ve hit rock bottom and have lost everything.
What I have seen is that most people are not ready to face their financial truth. The mere thought of doing something about their debt problems produces a painful pit in their stomach- so they become paralyzed. Instead of taking action, they procrastinate as if things will get better with their inaction. They wouldn’t even the open letters they get in the mail thinking that it may be another collection letter or a lawsuit. They let the credit card statements sit there and pretty soon they don’t even know how much they owe anymore. Their financial situation has spiraled out of control and they don’t know how to fix it.
Of course, this doesn’t make any sense because logically, they know that bills will not go away and the numbers don’t change. But people who are seriously in debt simply want to avoid the truth because dealing with reality seems too painful. Do you know anyone in this situation, perhaps, you? I don’t want to pass judgment on anyone and I know how difficult it is to be facing financial challenges (I’ve been there once in my life). But let me tell you that the only way you will ever overcome your fear is by facing it. You need to open those letters. You need to review the bills. You need to look at your income and your expenses and figure out where your money is going every month.
You may feel that once you face the financial truth, it will be hopeless anyway and there is nothing you can do to change it. But let me assure you that even if you had to file bankruptcy in order to get out of debt, avoiding the truth will only keep you stuck where you are, unable to move forward. The truth may seem awful but unless you deal with the truth and look at your options, you will never be able to take needed action to correct the situation.
