Don’t keep debt problems to yourself

HAVE you ever faced a situation in your life where you needed help so badly but you were just too afraid or embarrassed to ask for it? Perhaps you felt confused and overwhelmed with the problem that you spent sleepless nights trying to figure out what to do.
As a bankruptcy attorney, over the years I have met a lot of people who were simply too embarrassed to seek help with their debt problems. Of course, this is perfectly understandable.  After all, financial matters are often too personal that we don’t even share this kind of information with our family or closest friends. The result is often isolation and loneliness. If people only knew what you were going through, maybe they could have extended a helping hand or at least offer to help you get professional help. But unless you open up, people don’t have the foggiest idea about what you’re going through. So what do you do?
Oftentimes I meet people who tell me that on the outside, everything looks like they are going just great. At least that’s what everyone thinks. They have good jobs, live in nice homes, they drive fancy cars and they own expensive things. These people look financially successful in the eyes of the world.  But unbeknownst to everyone, these people are harboring a deep secret: Nobody knows that everything that they have was purchased on credit and they could hardly afford to make the payments each month!!! These people are in debt to their eyeballs and no one has the slightest clue.
At the end of a long day, these people can’t even get a good night’s sleep because they are worried sick about how their next paycheck will cover all their bills. They get this sick feeling in their stomach just thinking about the pile of bills on their kitchen table that they haven’t been able to pay. The world thinks that they are financially successful so how can they let anyone down? They need to keep up with the image that the world has of them and they don’t want to disappoint anyone. So day after day, they continue to live with this “secret” that nobody knows. Deep inside, it’s driving them crazy.
These days, people no longer “keep up with the Joneses”.  Instead, they try to keep up with what they see on TV.  Do you remember those credit card commercials where they show all these happy people, having fun and they seem to not have a care in the world?  In our society, we are often brainwashed into believing that the more credit you have and the more money you borrow, the happier you will become and the better your life will be.  So we go for the bait  and before we know it, we have fallen into the debt trap.
The truth of the matter is that “more” is not necessarily better if we are never satisfied with whatever we have. The truly financially wealthy people of this world know that it is not what you make that counts but it is what you get to keep. If you want to be wealthy someday, you need to understand that the key to wealth is spending less, not more, of what you earn.
If your finances are out of control, you need to do something about this situation- the sooner the better. Don’t let yourself drown in debt and ruin your future. If you need to get a fresh financial start by eliminating debts or at least consolidating your bills, remember that we also have bankruptcy laws that can help you get out of the financial mess that you may be in. Don’t be discouraged. It’s not the end of the world.  If you have made mistakes in the past, well, who hasn’t?
