THREE Filipino Americans are among the artists and creatives who received nominations for this year’s 73rd annual Tony Awards.
Broadway star Eva Noblezada is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her role as Eurydice in “Hadestown.” This is Noblezada’s second Tony Award nomination after she was also nominated in 2017 for her lead role as Kim in “Miss Saigon.”
“Can’t believe it. Wow. We don’t make art for recognition. We do it because it heals us. And I represent myself, but more so the magical humans I fall in love with every night. Thank you,” Noblezada wrote in a tweet on Tuesday, following the announcement.
Filipino American set designer Robert Brill is co-nominated along with Peter Nigrini for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for their work on “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations.”
In 2004, Brill received his first Tony nomination for his set design in “Assassins.” It was followed in 2009 for his work in “Guys and Dolls.”
Filipino American costume designer Clint Ramos also received his third Tony nomination for Best Costume Design of a Play for his work on “Torch Song.”
Ramos won the prestigious award in 2016 for “Eclipsed,” which featured Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. He was once again hailed for costume design on “Once On This Island” in 2019.
The awarding ceremony will take place on June 9 at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Actor James Corden will host the 73rd Tony Awards.
