Fil-Ams have 2nd highest income among Asian Americans

LOS ANGELES – According to Philippine Ambassador the the United States Jose Cuisia Jr., Filipino-Americans are the second top income earners among Asian Americans.

Citing a 2010 US Census report, Cuisia said that the average annual income of Fil-Ams is pegged at around $75,000 – a much greater number than the average American’s income, which is $49,000.

In an ABS-CBNnews.com report, Cusia noted that Filipino-Americans come only second to Indians in terms of income.

The ambassador pointed out that the per capita income for Fil-Ams is high mainly because of the sheer number of Pinoys in the healthcare industry.

“Doctors and nurses. You won’t believe it, but nurses make as much s $60,000 to $70,000, especially among operating room nurses,” Cuisia said. He went on to add that doctors in the US earn as much as $150,000 to $200,000 per year.

Cuisia also explained why many Filipinos still see the United States as “the land of opportunities.”

With a population of about 3.4 million, Filipinos make up the second-largest group among Asian Americans, second only to the Chinese. With many of these Fil-Ams doing well for themselves in the US, most Filipinos back home in the Philippines believe that they too can find better opportunities here.

“They look at the US as their dreamland. They would like to go to the US if only they could, especially if they have relatives who do quite well in the US,” Cuisia said of the Pinoys back home.

However, Cuisia went on to point out that Filipinos are still not adequately represented in the US Congress. The ambassador believes that even when Fil-Ams have good jobs and lead good lives in America, they “don’t seem to care.”

“They don’t even register. They don’t even vote. And this is what I am advocating now, especially in the younger generation, that you have to register and vote because you should be concerned about your future. You have to have a hand in shaping that future,” Cuisia was quoted as saying in an ABS-CBNnews.com report.

He went on to add that Filipinos in the US should ensure that they are properly represented in the political arena.

“I think, in the younger generation, we will have a better chance,” Cusia said.
