Cause of Wednesday fire still undetermined
AN Island Pacific supermarket in the Los Angeles Koreatown neighborhood has been destroyed after going up in flames just past midnight on Wednesday, January 10.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) received 9-1-1 calls from passersby starting at 12:30 a.m. early Wednesday morning, according to LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey.
Firefighters arrived at the Island Pacific Seafood Market at 229 S. Vermont Avenue to find the fire was burning through the one story building’s roof.
Humphrey said the structure lasted for about an hour and 45 minutes, and was put down before it was able to destroy the other 10 stores in the L-shaped Koreatown strip mall.
The supermarket shares the strip mall with business like Kowloon Dimsum and Banco de Oro (BDO) remit.
A total of 104 Los Angeles firefighters were dispatched under the command of Assistant Chief Roy Harvey.
No injuries have been reported as of this writing, and fire loss to the Filipino supermarket is still being tabulated.
The cause of the fire also remains under active investigation of this writing.
Wednesday’s fire is the second of three structure fires to happen within a two mile radius in the past two weeks.
Another fire was reported that morning at 3:16 a.m. on the 1700 block S. New Hampshire Avenue with one civilian fatality. Just last week, a structure fire a mile away resulted in the death of a 74-year-old man who was found inside his senior-living apartment unit. (Rae Ann Varona/AJPress)
