THIS article, a continuation of last week’s, was originally intended for outdoor activities during the rainy season in the Philippines. However, with the present condition, it would be nonsensical and insensitive to suggest items on how people can try to enjoy the heavy downpour outside their houses—when, really, people should take necessary precautions.
Therefore, let us talk about “It’s raining and we won’t stop 2.0” in a different light.
The climate has changed through the years. The seasons have become harsh in their own ways. When the sun is out, it is nothing but irritatingly hot—the air comes with humid and the ground emits heat. When the rain is on, it gives its all—the water floods the streets up to who-knows-how deep and causes bays and rivers to overflow, and the strong winds crash the trees and detach the roofs.
Each year, Filipinos automatically expect calamities to come into their land: damaged crops in the early months and, more unfortunately, flood- and landslide-related casualties late in the year.
It’s raining and we won’t stop with our wicked ways?
Sugar-coating aside, ours is definitely the nation which cannot afford to have these catastrophes. The Philippines is still a developing country and its funds are not sufficient to provide everyone with protection, much more with relief. Sure, the blame is on those PDAF and DAP people; but are we aware that we, in our own little and supposedly unintentional ways, are also contributors to these misfortunes?
Our patronization of products that harm our ozone layer and endanger our trees causes the abnormality of the climate. Right now, the ozone layer does not function well in protecting us from the direct heat of the sun. The trees are not enough to trap the the rain waters so they would not turn into flood and to hold the soils together so there would not be landslides. We throw our garbage anywhere which eventually ends up in the drainage systems. All these, in turn, kill us – and we won’t stop?
It’s raining and we won’t stop helping each other.
We may appear careless towards nature or are just ignorant of the effects of our actions, but we definitely have a heart for our neighbors when the need arises. Just like in the recent Yolanda disaster, Filipinos, in general, wholeheartedly lent a helping hand. Although the events were ill-fated, the country had the power to move forward and go on with life because of the support each gives. No matter where in the 7,107 Philippine islands a calamity occurs, the Filipinos will be in it together.
It’s raining and we won’t stop 2.0
This article was supposed to suggest wakeboarding, surfing, and staycation in a hotel; but these may be guilty luxuries when we know that others lost their properties in the recent Glenda incident.
What this article can do to help bring out that smile during the rainy season is to tell you, in a matter-of-factly way, that maybe, deep down, you love the rain. You are just prejudiced by the dark clouds and the muddy floor. You are just affected by the hassled faces of the people you come across. You do not need to make an effort and spend your money on the fun things because you naturally love the pitter-patter sound the rain makes when it hits a surface. You like how you have a ticket to be all sentimental. You like how the rain makes the world pause and gives you that “me” time to assess and reflect.
Therefore, let your teeth glisten and your lips broaden from ear to ear—because, really, nothing can stop you from smiling even when it is raining.
