ONE could only imagine the stress and responsibilities attached to being a leader of a country. So for a number of people, it is a question why one would even aspire to run for the position of president.
In the past months, the list of candidates in 2010 for president was limited to a few people, mostly members of the Senate. However, just recently, another name cropped up in the line-up – Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.
Binay does not hide his intentions for 2010, admitting that he was open to a draft. Still, he also knows that there are many things to be considered before he actually joins the battle for the presidency.
There is no doubt that Binay has the makings of a leader. For one, he has made Makati a thriving city to date. In 2006, Binay was chosen among the Top 10 Mayors of the World, taking 4th place. With all these achievements, one would think that he would have aspired for a higher position long ago. However, he has never assumed a national post and has remained in his local position by choice.
Also, Binay practices two virtues that can be deemed necessary as a future leader of a nation such as the Philippines – being a populist (makamasa) and decisive (tigasin). Because of this, his name has become a byword all over the country.
It’s still a long road for all presidential hopefuls until the actual elections in 2010. It is our fervent hope that whoever wins, will put the country’s interests on top of his or her list. (AJPress)
