AUTHOR and Pulitzer Prize winner David C. McCullough once said, “History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.”
This is somewhat true for us Filipinos, having such a rich and colorful history. Just for this month, August, is a journey to past events that changed our nation and people. Aside from celebrating Buwan ng Wika, the month holds a long list of milestones, achievements and events – sacrifices, struggles and triumphs – everything that shaped our culture and life as Filipinos.
We have read and studied Philippine history in school, albeit, with little interest. We are so wrapped with our lives in the present that we chose to ignore the past events that have defined who and what we are today. McCullough is exact in saying that history has navigated us in perilous times, since the Philippines had been through wars, revolutions, and disasters. But the past has taught us how and why these have happened, and most of all, can show us how to face future adversities.
History is a massive complex of intertwined events, but it is essential that we know about it and understand its significance to us as a people and nation. This first issue of the month is a walk into history and then a step to reality – something we can look forward to because we carry into us all the lessons from our nation’s rich history. (AJPress)
