The hero as a part of the human race portrays the ideals and excellence that man strives to reach. It is the society that defines the hero, and (s)he gives back by leaving behind a legacy that will be passed on through generations. They come and go in the different stages of our history to constantly remind us to live up to their standards and even go beyond the means of our existence. Some of them have paved the way for revolutions and major changes because they dared to challenge the conventions of their times. Most of the time, their lives are taken in the process. With the taking of those lives, ideas and ideals are planted. They are stitched into the consciousness of a nation; the desired result of which changes the details on the tapestry of history.

Also, the hallowed place of heroes is not a realm that is exclusive to humans. Our dear animal friends also have a special place in them. In a country known for its native dogs (get the term right, it is Asong Pinoy or Aspin, not Askal), these dogs are popular for being loyal and affectionate yet shy companions. Another story is added to Aspin lore with the dog Kabang providing positive energy into our capacity for the heroic.

The event that transpired in Zamboanga City in December last year could evoke a whimper out of audiences and wonder on skeptics who are still deciphering how it happened. But the facts remain: Kabang, a female Aspin dog saw that a speeding motorcycle was about to hit her master’s daughter and niece. The dog threw herself in front of the motorcycle and pushed the girls to safety. Having done this, her snout got caught in the spoke and in the process her upper snout was severed off her beautiful native face.

To think that Kabang’s master had intentions of preparing her as asocena (dog meat dish) to offer as a feast for his family when he chanced upon this dog as a stray puppy. Now, she is in America, at the University of California at Davis Medical Teaching Hospital for reconstructive surgery. With the help of concerned individuals, funds were raised to secure her trip and other expenses. The funds have reached its goal of $20,000 and still counting.

Kabang’s heroism highlights the unique relationship of man, not just with dogs, but with the cosmic order of things. To deny Kabang of any feeling/emotion and relegate her actions completely to her “pack” mentality and instincts would leave much for debate. She can now be considered a superstar among dogs, not just Aspins, but among other breeds as well. Her deed just showed us another face of heroism; that it has nothing to do with pedigree.

There are still Aspins out there, neglected and condemned to miserable lives. They too, need saving. Kabang’s deed might have caused repercussions that will go down in canine history, a history very much intertwined with ours.
