Led by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the NAM has been observed since 1991 by way of Presidential Proclamation 683. Here, the seven committees of the NCCA’s Subcommission on the Arts– architecture, cinema, dance, literature, music, theater, and the visual arts take the stage. Once, the NAM was just a NCR-centric affair, but now it has spread across Visayas and Mindanao providing a venue for encounters for different artists and their works, and their audience as well. Some of the events to look forward to include the Taboan, a literary arts festival being stage in Dumaguete City; Philippine International Visual Arts Festival in Camiguin; Sayaw Pinoy, a touring dance concert; and Tunog-Tugan: First International Gongs and Bamboo Music Festival.
This month will be nothing but another 28 days if we let it be. But with the celebration of Philippine Art, it takes on a different meaning for we are all involved here. Though some have reservations for it, we cannot deny the fact that art surrounds us. It provides the nourishment—like the food we consume for sustenance—that our soul needs, and it spreads across individuals to become the dietary requirement that the country needs.
