ON Sunday, January 9th, 2022, Holy Family Church (209 E. Lomita Avenue, Glendale) will celebrate Santo Niño at 11:00 a.m. This year, a Sinulog, a praise worship dance ritual will be performed by Our Lady of Fatima Rosary Crusade Members at reception which will make this event special and memorable for the faithful. The group has been rehearsing for several weeks to share with parishioners the beauty of this cultural tradition. Dancers will wear costumes symbolizing the time Queen Juana and King Humabon embraced Christianity in Cebu. Limited seating indoors and outdoors are available. The celebrant is Fr. Michael Mesa.
In the 16th century, the first statue Santo Niño was presented to Queen Juana, wife of King Humabon. She was overjoyed upon seeing the innocent and kind face of Baby Jesus. She was baptized and opened her heart to Catholicism. The natives were also baptized. Ferdinand Magellan planted the Cross of Christianity on the day baptism occurred in Cebu. To this day, Filipinos from various walks of life bring prayers to the Santo Niño. He is the protector and has power to grant and answer their prayers. Devotions to him are part of every parish’s life. Every Filipino home has an image of Santo Niño. The image is particularly revered by people from Cebu where Spaniards established the first colonial capital. The devotion to Christ Child Jesus has spread beyond that region. This year’s celebration also commemorates 500 Years of Philippine Christianity. Devotees are requested to bring their Santo Niño statues. The Parish observes safety protocols. Please mask up.
