MANILA — Melanie Marquez has recalled passing on a proposed fashion-show appearance with fellow Filipina model Anna Bayle because she did not want their careers presented as a competition.
Marquez said she responded by asking for three times her usual talent fee, effectively taking herself out of consideration. She described the decision as an expression of respect for Bayle and the international modeling career she had established.
Details of the proposed appearance, including its organizer, date and venue, have not been publicly established, so the episode is presented as Marquez’s recollection rather than as an independently documented event.
Marquez represented the Philippines at Miss International in 1979 and won the title. She later built a long career in modeling, film and television and recently appeared in designer Boyet Fajardo’s Holiday 2026 collection.
Bayle, meanwhile, developed an international modeling career spanning Paris, Milan and New York. Her work included leading designers such as Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Givenchy, Valentino, Gianni Versace and Michael Kors.
Widely described in the fashion industry as Asia’s first supermodel, Bayle has acknowledged that Asian models worked internationally before her. She retired from full-time modeling in 1994 and now lives in Millbrook, New York, where she works in luxury real estate.
Marquez’s recollection offers a counterpoint to the familiar practice of casting accomplished women as rivals. In her telling, she chose professional respect over competition.
Their careers followed different paths, but both helped broaden the visibility of Filipinas in international beauty, fashion and entertainment.
