If you grew up in a Filipino household, you’ve probably heard the words, “Huwag mong ipagsabi muna.” (“Don’t tell everyone just yet.”)
Whether it was a pregnancy, a new job, a business opportunity, or the purchase of a home, many of us were taught to wait before making an announcement. Some believed that doing so protected a blessing from bati or unnecessary envy. Others simply called it wisdom. Whatever the reason, the lesson was the same: Protect what is still growing.
As I’ve grown in my faith, I’ve come to appreciate the wisdom behind those words, not from a place of fear, but from a place of stewardship.
The Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:7 that there is “a time to keep silence and a time to speak.” Wisdom is knowing the difference.
As a mortgage advisor, I often tell my clients, “Don’t announce that you’ve bought the house until you have the keys in your hands.” It is not because we expect something to go wrong, but because, until escrow closes, there is still work to be done. Financing can change. Conditions still need to be met. The celebration comes after the keys are in your hands.
Life works much the same way.
Think about one of life’s greatest blessings: a pregnancy. Most parents don’t announce that they’re expecting the moment they see a positive test. They wait until the pregnancy has had time to develop. It is not because they’re living in fear, but because something precious deserves time to grow before it is shared with the world.
I’ve learned that the same principle applies to many areas of life.
The early stages of a dream deserve protection. They’re often the most vulnerable to doubt, distraction, comparison, and the weight of other people’s opinions.
Life has taught me that not every smile celebrates your success and not every voice speaks life into your dream. That’s not a reason to become suspicious of others. It’s simply a reminder to be discerning.
Whether you’re paying off debt, starting a business, saving for your first home, restoring a relationship, or pursuing a dream God has placed on your heart, not every blessing needs an immediate announcement. Sometimes, the wisest thing we can do is quietly prepare, faithfully steward what God has entrusted to us, and trust His timing.
There will come a day to celebrate. There will come a day to share your testimony.
But until then, protect the process. Trust His timing.
And when the season is right, let the blessing speak for itself.
