MANILA — Actor JM de Guzman describes his latest television project, My Bespren Emman, as closely connected to his own experiences with recovery and faith, framing the role as part of a broader effort to translate personal struggles into meaningful storytelling.

The series, airing on TV5 and produced by Numinous Narratives with Spring Films, explores themes of redemption, spiritual conflict, and second chances.

De Guzman has previously spoken in interviews about living with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, as well as his recovery from substance use. In discussing the series, he characterizes those experiences as informing his approach to the role and as a basis for encouraging conversations around mental health.

In My Bespren Emman, he plays Mateo, a man seeking to rebuild his life after past mistakes. The character is guided by Emman, portrayed by Ely Buendia, whose presence reinforces the show’s spiritual dimension.

The actor has acknowledged the emotional demands of the role, noting that he draws from real-life experiences while maintaining boundaries during production. He has also described a recent period of personal difficulty marked by a sense of disconnection from faith, followed by a renewed focus that coincided with the project.

Across his public statements, De Guzman has consistently identified faith as a stabilizing force through periods of instability. He said he hopes the series resonates with viewers navigating their own challenges.

Producers position the series within a growing slate of Philippine programs addressing mental health and personal recovery, with an emphasis on accountability, healing, and the possibility of renewal.
