LOS Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has nominated Susana Reyes, a long-time public servant and community leader, to the city’s Board of Public Works.

Reyes, who is Filipina American, is the current vice president of the Board of Water and Power Commission.

“Susana is a selfless public servant who has spent her career building a more resilient and fair Los Angeles,” said Garcetti said in a statement on Tuesday, April 12. “Her strong commitment to equity, environmental justice, and public safety will make her a powerful addition to the Board of Public Works.”

Prior to joining the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Board of Commissioners, Reyes served as the director of LADWP’s Low-Income Customer Access, where she worked to provide low-income ratepayers with access to financial assistance, discounts, and rebates.

In addition to being a public servant for over 32 years, Reyes is the founder and CEO of AgilEngines LLC, an advocacy and consulting firm focused on community outreach and civic engagement strategies.

Reyes also served on the Mayor’s Sustainability team as a Senior Sustainability Analyst, where she helped oversee the implementation of Los Angeles’ first Sustainable City pLAn and helped secure a $1.7 million grant for the City from the California Air and Resources Board to help launch BlueLA, an EV car sharing pilot program in low-income communities. Reyes is an active member of the Sierra Club, elected to the organization’s first-ever all-female Executive Committee in 2017.

“The City of Los Angeles is at a pivotal point when it comes to advancement of its critical infrastructure projects, resources, assets, and services to the City’s residents and businesses,” said Reyes in a statement. “I am honored by this opportunity to lead with equity, creativity and innovation, using my diverse perspectives and wealth of experience gained from decades of leadership positions within the City to further our commitments to cleaner neighborhoods, sustainable infrastructure, public safety, and healthy land, water, and air.”

The City of Los Angeles Board of Public Works (BPW) is the five-member executive team responsible for the administration of the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, overseeing and managing more than 5,000 employees within the Department’s five bureaus: Bureau of Contract Administration, Bureau of Engineering, Bureau of Sanitation, Bureau of Street Lighting, and the Bureau of Street Services.

If confirmed, Reyes will be the second Filipina American to serve on the Board of Public Works, succeeding Jessica Caloza, who was the lead commissioner for the Board’s Bureau of Engineering from 2019 to 2022.
