(Los Angeles, CA October 13, 2014) The Fil-Am directed horror film, “Voodoo Possession” featuring genre legend Danny Trejo hosts online salute to Filipinos in horror.

Fil-Am Creative, the largest Filipino American organization for entertainment and media, is hosting a 2-week salute to Filipinos in the horror film genre at Filamcreative.org starting Oct. 17 and leading up to Halloween. The blog will be hosted by Fil-Am filmmaker Walter Boholst and his new horror film “Voodoo Possession” which debuted earlier this year on home video at Redbox, Walmart, Amazon and other retail outlets. Halo-Haloween will feature behind the scenes interviews and clips from the film along with Filipino horror themed works and stories.

“Part of FAC’s mission is to showcase its members by having them ‘take over’ our blog by programming content,” said Rex Sampaga, Marketing Director of Fil-Am Creative. “Walter was already promoting his horror film so it made sense to have him take over the blog for Halo-Haloween with his film while also showcasing other aspects of Filipino horror. There aren’t a lot of feature films directed by Filipino Americans let alone Fil-Am directed horror films. So let’s celebrate it along with the season.”

“Between all of the Filipino actors in horror films and TV shows, new works by up and coming artists and the rich history of Filipino myths and legends there’s no shortage of horror themed content to talk about,” said Boholst. “I’m excited to program Halo-Haloween and am open to ideas and suggestions as well.”

1Voodoo Possession is about when a cynical Aiden Chase journeys to a Haitian insane asylum in search of his missing brother he discovers all the inmates and the hospital administrator (Danny Trejo) are seemingly possessed by a bloodthirsty voodoo spirit.

When presented with an opportunity to create a horror movie in the world of voodoo Boholst strived to make something different to set it apart from the myriad of identical and simplistic low-budget horror movies. “I really wanted to make something intelligent, complex, something that challenges audiences,” said Boholst. “I didn’t want to make another movie about a group of young people getting lost in the woods and chopped up by a random stranger.” The plot, which jumps between different levels of the voodoo spirit world, lends itself to a sort of mind- bending “Inception” set in the world of horror.

But the low budget played a role in how Boholst changed construction of the film as the financing came together and the budget changed. “This movie is very ambitious. It’s really bigger than the budget we had available,” he said. “So when we had to cut action scenes, particularly in the first act of the movie, we reverted to a more slow-burn horror approach in the 1st act similar to Kubrick’s “The Shining” where it’s more about atmosphere, tone and creepiness than thrills or scary ‘boo’ moments.”

“This isn’t just a pure horror film. It’s multi-genre. It’s more of a drama or psychological thriller. I’d say it owes some of its DNA to foreign horror films such as Guillermo Del Toro’s “The Devil’s Backbone” or “The Orphanage” where they’re more about drama, a dark story and characters rather than cheap thrills,” he added.

Halo-Haloween will kick off Oct. 17 and run through its finale on Halloween Oct. 31.
