PH Tourism Secretary Teo, DTI rep to join Fiesta in America festivities

NEW YORK – Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Corazon Tulfo Teo will be the keynote guest speaker at the Fiesta in America, slated to happen in Secaucus, New Jersey on August 13 and 14, 2016, the Asian Journal has learned.

Sec. Teo was in the news recently when she announced on July 28 that the Philippines will be hosting the Miss Universe pageant in January 2017, with the hopes that the international event would drive more foreign visitors to the Philippines. This will be the third time that the country is hosting the international beauty pageant. The first was in 1974 when Amparo Munoz won, then 20 years later in 1994 when Sushmita Sen was crowned Miss Universe.

In an interview, the DOT secretary said she met with Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization who had proposed to hold the 2017 beauty pageant in the Philippines next January. The Miss Universe team, including Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, met with President Rodrigo Duterte and the DOT team recently to iron out the details of the country’s hosting.

The secretary met with the Asian Journal / Balikbayan Magazine last week to discuss her plans for the department and how to continually increase tourist arrivals to the country. She was based in Davao for more than two decades and it was there where she met then-Mayor Duterte. Back then, Sec. Teo has been passionate about tourism and showcasing the best that the country has to offer.

“And that was the time when the president saw I was really doing my best selling the destinations in the Philippines,” Sec. Teo said.

She is also a strong believer that the global Filipino market is a strong market that needs to get encouraged more to travel back to the homeland.

Secretary Teo graduated with a degree in Business Administration from St. Theresa’s College, Quezon City. She is the owner and past president of Mt. Apo Travel and Tours in Davao City and an active tourism player in Davao. She is also a member of the Davao Travel Agencies Association (DTAA), the Davao Association of Tour Operators (DATO), the Davao Regional Tourism Council (DRTC), and the president of the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (NAITAS).
