FANS of Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao have something to look forward to next year, as the former eight-division world champion assured that he will still fight.
While he did not drop any names of possible opponents, Pacquiao disclosed that his camp is currently negotiating for a comeback match next year.
“Siguro mga January malalaman natin (Maybe we can know by January),” Pacquiao told ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo.
According to Pacquiao, his match will likely be scheduled sometime within the first half of 2018. “By April may laban na (There will be a match by April),” the fighting senator said.
Pacquiao has not been in the ring since losing his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight title to Australia’s Jeff Horn during a match last July in Brisbane.
Pacquiao initially wanted a rematch against Horn but the Filipino boxer reportedly refused to have the fight again in Australia.
Asked about his supposed challenge to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) superstar Conor McGregor, Pacquiao said, “Wala pa kay McGregor (No news yet).”
In a social media post last November 23, Pacquiao teased a possible match next year against McGregor when he used the hashtags “2018” and “real boxing match.”
“Happy Thanksgiving! Stay fit my friend. #realboxingmatch #2018 @thenotoriousmma,” the Filipino boxer posted on his Instagram account along with a photo of the UFC Lightweight Champion.
