A MAJORITY of Filipinos believe that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is “better” than former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, according to a Social Weather Station (SWS) survey result reported by radio network DZBB on Monday, January 8.
As stated in the report, 70 percent of Filipinos said that Duterte has performed better than his predecessor, while 8 percent said Aquino was better than Duterte. The remaining 22 percent said the two leaders had the same performance.
Duterte’s approval rating was the highest in Mindanao at 86 percent, followed by in Metro Manila at 73 percent, in Visayas at 64 percent, and in balance Luzon at 63 percent. Aquino, on the other hand, got the highest approval in Metro Manila at 10 percent.
In the survey, respondents were asked the question: “Kung ikukumpara ang pag-ganap ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa kanyang tungkulin mula Hulyo 2016 sa pagkaganap ni dating pangulong Aquino mula Hulyo 2010 hanggang Hulyo 2016, masasabi n’yo ba na PRRD is better, the same, PNoy is better (Comparing the performance of President Rodrigo Duterte from July 2016 to former President Aquino’s from July 2010 to July 2016, would you say PRRD is better, the same, [or] PNoy is better)?”
The report also found that 69 percent of Filipinos believe that Duterte’s actions are appropriate for his position as president, while 18 percent of those surveyed said Duterte’s actions were inappropriate. 13 percent were undecided.
The SWS poll was reportedly conducted from December 8 to 16 last year.
In a comment, Palace Spokesperson Harry Roque remarked that the survey result “confirms already what we already know as a fact.”
Still most ‘approved, trusted’
In a separate survey conducted by Pulse Asia last month, Duterte remains the most “approved” and most “trusted” among the top five government officials in the Philippines.
Based on the poll result, which was released over the weekend, Duterte received an approval rating of 80 percent and trust rating of 82 percent. The figures barely changed from his previous 80 percent approval and 80 percent trust ratings in September last year.
In the latest poll, Duterte received the highest approval and trust ratings in Mindanao at 93 percent and 94 percent respectively.
The president also enjoyed a majority of approval in Visayas at 86 percent, in Metro Manila at 79 percent, and in balance Luzon at 72 percent. He likewise got high trust ratings in Visayas at 86 percent, Metro Manila at 79 percent, and balance Luzon at 74 percent.
Duterte’s overall approval and trust ratings were also higher than of Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo’s approval rating of 59 percent and a trust rating of 58 percent.
Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, on the other hand, got 57 percent approval rating and 53 percent trust rating, while House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez had an approval rating of 42 and a trust rating of 37 percent.
Lauding the Duterte’s high ratings, Roque said the survey result only “showed that our people are aware of and recognizes significant strides the president undertook in his one year and a half in office.”
The Palace official also assured that Duterte “will continue to discharge his duties with nation’s interest foremost in his mind.”
He also called on the public “to put this appreciation into action by standing as one and helping the government as we continue to address the problem of poverty, illegal drugs, criminality and corruption.”
