A Filipino Lakers fan on Tuesday, January 3, took home $95,000 after hitting an improbable half court shot during a Los Angeles Lakers game at the Staples Center.
Between the third and fourth quarters, Jerald Acoba, from Tulare, California, sank the Aria Big Shot Jackpot contest.
Following his successful shot, the 30-year-old pointed at his wrists, mimicking D’Angelo Russell’s trademark “ice in my veins.”
“It’s good to see a lot of fans keeping that ‘ice in the veins’ going,” Russell said after the game, according to reports from NBA.com. “I appreciate everybody for that. That’s a lot of money, man. Take care of it.”
Acoba told the crowd that he plans to buy his mother a new car with the money he won. He said that he wanted to upgrade his parent’s old van.
“She’s always been there for me when I need her,” Acoba said. “She’s always there to help me out. It’s my turn to repay the favor to her.”
Acoba went to watch the game with his wife, Lenslie, and his nieces. He is the fifth winner of the Lakers’ Big Shot Jackpot and also the second winner for this season.
“It’s surreal right now,” Acoba said. “I can’t believe it’s just happening right now.” n
