PHILIPPINE President Rodrigo Duterte has been included in the ranks of the World’s Most Powerful People in 2016, as listed by Forbes Magazine.
Published online on Wednesday, December 14, Forbes featured 74 personalities around the globe based on the following ‘four dimensions of power’: their power over lots of people; the financial resources they control; how powerful they were in multiple spheres; and if they actively used their power.
Duterte ranked 70th, marking his first time to be included in the list.
“The former mayor of Davao City (Duterte) was elected president of the Philippines in May 2016 on the strength of a campaign that promised the swift execution of drug users and other criminals, and his war on crime has already resulted in the killing of thousands of people,” Forbes wrote.
It also noted Duterte’s previous announcement that he would “separate” the Philippines from its decades-long ally, the United States, with plans to realign with China.
“Duterte’s tendency to say what he thinks, no matter how raw, also keeps him in the headlines: He’s referred to U.S. President Barack Obama as a ‘son of a whore’ and used homophobic slurs to describe political opponents,” Forbes’ added.
Forbes also mentioned Vice President Leni Robredo’s resignation from Duterte’s cabinet, following the president’s earlier order for her to “desist” from attending any future cabinet meetings.
Meanwhile, topping the list was Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ranked first for the fourth consecutive year, followed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in second place.
‘Very good’ rating
Also this week, Duterte also garnered a “very good” net satisfaction rating in the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey conducted from Dec. 3 to 6.
In the poll, with about 1,500 respondents, Duterte scored a +63 net satisfaction, just one point down compared to the previous survey conducted last September.
According to Malacañang, the survey’s result is a reflection of the public’s “continuous strong support for the president and his administration.”
“(This) will serve as an inspiration for (the president) to redouble his energy to be true to his oath of office and fulfill his promise of getting rid of drugs, crime and corruption in our society,” Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said in a statement on Wednesday.
Citing the different problems the Philippines is currently facing, Andanar said the president is doing his best to address these problems and is seeking the public’s support.
“But he is doing his best to address all these and hopes that the Filipino people would support him all the way as unity and firm resolve are what we need to move forward as a nation,” he added.
