Will provide affordable housing for more than 50 veterans and their families
THE Carson City Council unanimously approved a development agreement with a subsidiary of Thomas Safran & Associates, a Los Angeles area -based housing developer.
The agreement provides financial assistance for the development of a 51-unit affordable housing community that will provide leasing preference to Veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
The project will include top market-rate amenities such as a community room, outdoor courtyard with grill and seating areas, a fitness center, a computer room and also offer social services and classes for the residents. Programming will include financial planning assistance; vocational programs; social activities; and various educational, recreational, social and fitness courses. These services will be provided to the residents free of charge.
The city’s assistance will consist of providing land for the project and providing up to $5.5 million in financial housing assistance towards the project development costs. The developer will also seek a 9 percent Low Income Housing Tax Credit from the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (TCAC) to finance the project.
If the developer is successful in obtaining the 9 percent TCAC award in the first application round of 2017, construction of this veteran’s housing development would begin later this year.
The City of Carson already currently provides a number of vital services for veterans, and now with this project, Carson will also provide much needed high quality affordable housing for Veterans and their families.
“When it comes to our veterans and their family, the City of Carson is putting its money where its mouth is,” said Carson Mayor Albert Robles. “We hope that other communities and especially the Federal government find a way to assist those who so bravely and unselfishly served our country. We can’t wait until this beautiful and much needed project is built.”
