You are bound to be there

THE rap artist Andrew E. gave people, at an early age, a picture of what Malate is in his song Banyo Queen—a place where one can have fun with an unacquaintance, then lose his or her money. All they needed was a little more awareness to learn that the song even suggests that Malate is a place to satisfy their carnal pleasures with a perfect stranger. It is, indeed, a red light district.

Some had the urge to stay away from Malate; not until it seemed to be a requirement.

When someone is of legal age, he or she is to have an encounter with the real adult world, or at least the liberated phase of it – where fun starts when he or she, with one hand thrown to the air and the other holding a glass of alcohol (or a cigarette for some), is a part the singing, or shouting, or dancing, or head-banging crowd. That is when Malate is inevitable. That is also when people can prove their assumptions of it to be wrong.

The setting of the sun in Manila Bay indicates the awakening of the flashing sign boards in Malate. It is the beginning of nightlife in the streets of M.H. del Pilar, Mabini, Remedios, and Adriatico streets. Most call it night out, some call it gimmick, and others refer to it as bar hopping, boy or girl hunting, and many terms from different jargon.

There are many famous places to enjoy the night in. People who do not plan to bar hop and are after the music, drinks, and company of friends can enjoy exhausting themselves inside the Cowboy Grill. The library is also a favorite. Comedians Pooh, Betty La Fea, Anton Diva, and a bunch of others are sure to serve you a good laugh.

However, life is not only found inside the establishments. In the streets, comprehension of lyrics is impossible since tons of songs are being played all at the same time. Every single person is in motion; every part of the person is in motion, too. Chaotic as it may seem, believe this: it defines a fun nightlife.

Certainly, judgment prevents us from seeing the good that lies beyond. It might be true that you were disgusted about Malate at first; but after a visit, admit that your life would have been less fun if you had not been there. Perhaps, it may be the place where you have truly expressed yourself.
