Pasalubongs you might want to take home

Our fellow Filipinos may be enjoying their stay outside the Philippines; but perhaps they get homesick once in a while. If you manage to visit our country, then you might want to do our kababayans a favor of personally bringing the Philippines to them. How? Through pasalubongs, of course!

Here are some presents that will make them remember our beautiful Philippines:

1. Suman

A typical Filipino’s meal is never complete without rice. There are a lot of versions of how we cook our rice; but the most Filipino-ish of them all is the suman. It is so common that you can find them in whichever part of the Philippines. It is a steamed rice cake with coconut milk and wrapped in leaf. Imagine eating this inside a bahay kubo or under a tree—and there you have it, a Philippine wonderland.

2. Vigan Longganisa

Just in time! You can visit Vigan as it is currently securing a spot on the New 7 Wonders of Nature list. And while you’re at it, you might want to take home the famous Vigan longganisa and let your friends have a taste of how wonderful Vigan is. Vigan longganisa is a small and plump sausage with garlic.

3. Danggit

Some people fly to Cebu just to satisfy their cravings with danggit. That is how delicious and unique this sun-dried rabbitfish is. Also called spinefoot, it is split open, cleaned, salted, then spread under the sun to dry. A bite on this sea-salt crunchy danggit will take you to a wonderful beachside setting in the Philippines.

4. Pili Tart

Bicol is abundant in pili nuts and Bicolanos just found the perfect way to put this of use. Thus, a Filipino favorite, pili tart! Pili tart is a thin and crunchy shortcrust pastry topped with a creamy custard made of pili nuts.

5. Peanut Kisses and Peanut Fingers

Even peanut haters will drool over Bohol’s famous peanut kisses. It is made of grounded peanuts and egg whites plus a hint of vanilla. This is perfect for a final course after a very heavy meal; but who knows, you might even finish a whole box of it.

6. Dried Mangoes

A treat for the sweet-tooth people out there! Forget the sugar-rich candies and calorie-laden chocolates and make a room for Cebu’s dried mangoes. This chewy favorite snack of Filipinos is naturally sweet and is rich in vitamins and minerals.

There are definitely a number of other pasalubongs that will remind our kababayans of the Philippines. Whatever it is, just let them know that you thought of them and wanted to share with them your experience back in our country. Anyway, that is just how naturally thoughtful Filipinos are.
