A floral procession for everyone

A floral procession for everyone

It is May again and it bursts with the fresh spunk of festivals. Shining among the festivities of this month is the observation of the Flores De Mayo. This tradition started during the Spanish Era where young girls, in their pristine innocence, offered flowers for the Virgin Mary in a parish church in Malolos, Bulacan. This humble act of reverence for the Mother of God is a clear sign of Filipino devotion, a showering of flowers signifying our maternal affections.

Preserving the Wonder Walled City and the Fort

Preserving the Wonder Walled City and the Fort

The recent news of the inclusion of Fort Santiago and Intramuros to the top 10 list of the Global Heritage Fund’s most endangered historical sites can be a little alarming not just for the cultural warriors, Manilenos, but to all Filipinos. Other places include Autthaya (Thailand), Kashgar (China), Mahasthangarh (Bangladesh), Mes Aynak (Afghanistan), Myauk-U (Myanmar), Plain of Jars (Laos), Preah Vihear (Cambodia), Rakhigari (India), and Taxila (Pakistan). According to the Global Heritage Fund, there are 5 man-made threats to these sites: development pressures, unsustainable tourism, insufficient management, looting, and war and conflict.

Fort Santiago and Intramuros are places charged with the dynamic energy of our nation’s history, these two sites already experienced its share of devastation—bombardments, fires, earthquakes, and the like—and they don’t deserve to suffer any more of it.

The river will be running soon

The river will be running soon

The Pasig River is a flowing bed of memories. Rivers are known to be carvers of culture and prosperity and the Pasig has been a benevolent entity to countless generations of Filipinos; as the term Tagalog means Taga-Ilog (Tagalog), which was a term for the Europ eans for people living in the Philippines. Baguio beckons

Baguio beckons

It’s summertime and the heat is on. One can feel it building, the waft of warm air into the nostrils heading straight to the lungs. Clothes becoming heavy and skin sticky with sweat, there’s a burning sensation. The Philippine summer is upon us. Here in the metro, the malls have become the usual respites from the heat with their massive air-conditioning systems spewing mechanical cold breaths for the chill fix of city and rural folk. But even before the advent of these convenient mega-structures, there has been a place up in the North that has been sheltering Filipinos from the ravages of summer.

Mother Earth’s big day

Mother Earth’s big day

It is a “monumental” day for the Earth this April 22 as the concerned citizens of the world will be converging for the 42nd staging of Earth Day. This special day for the Earth was created in 1970 through the initiative of former senator Gaylord Nelson with the help of other driven individuals like former congressman Pete McCloskey and Denis Hayes. Its inaugural rallied 20 million Americans out in the streets to have their voices heard concerning the environment. The number grew as it became global in 1990 with over 200 million people spread across 141 countries collectively lifting the environmental issues that were plaguing the planet. Now, the number rises to 500 million in 175 countries. This is the voice of the people of the Earth, unaffected by cultural and geographical barriers, letting the sectors around us—businesses, governments, etc.—know of an ardent desire for change and realistic action with how we treat Mother Earth.
