Los Angeles resident wins grand prize in the recently concluded Philippine Travel Gems Facebook Photo Contest

LOS ANGELES -  Amir Abad Ocampo of Los Angeles, CA wins the Grand Prize of 1 Round-Trip Ticket to the Philippines and Hotel Accommodation in the recently concluded Philippine Travel Gems Facebook Photo Contest which was jointly conducted by the Philippine Department of Tourism-Los Angeles and Majestic Vacations in partnership with Philippine Airlines.

The contest is part of the 6-month joint campaigns between DOT and Majestic Vacations to promote the Philippines as an exceptional tourist destination to North American residents using various digital platforms such as electronic flyers, email promotional campaigns, and digital newsletters.  The Facebook Photo Contest aims to engage future travelers through photographs, personal experiences and impressions of those who have travelled to the Philippines.

The contest attracted numerous participants, with a final total of 58 photo entries.  The photo entries were an amazing mix of both popular and rarely visited destinations in the Philippines, cultural impressions, historical places, fun activities, underwater scenes, and family trips.

Selection and judging of the final winners were done in three stages.  In the first stage of selection, members of the panel of judges each chose 5 photos as semi-finalists.  Depending on the votes earned, 3 photos advanced to the second stage of judging.  Of the remaining 3 finalists, the final 2 photos were selected, with the one earning the highest number of votes from the judges declared as the first prize winner.

Amir Abad’s photo of an ethereal image of Batanes after a downpour received the unanimous nods from all three judges to win the first prize.  Meanwhile, Tom Wagner’s eerie photo of the ruins of Battery Crockett gun emplacements in Corregidor won the second prize.

Consolation prize went to Cesar Angeles, Jr.’s photo of a traditional Philippine banca docked on the clear waters of Banana Island in Coron, Palawan which was highly engaged and registered the highest numbers of “likes” and “shares” on Facebook.

Members of the panel of judges include Richmond Jimenez, Tourism Attache of the Philippine Department of Tourism-Los Angeles;  Eliza Chung, Regional Director of Majestic Vacations; and Tess Garces, Los Angeles Area Sales Manager of Philippine Airlines.

The first prize of Round Trip Ticket to the Philippines was sponsored by Philippines Airlines, plus Hotel Accommodations courtesy of the Philippine Department of Tourism-Los Angeles.  The second prize of iPAD Air was sponsored by Majestic Vacations, while the consolation prize of 2-night hotel accommodation in a 5-star hotel in Manila was from the Philippine Department of Tourism-Los Angeles.

Per Facebook report, the Philippine Travel Gems Facebook Photo Contest entries reached a total number of 24,635 people from the period July to December 2016, while the contest’s promotional flyer reached a total of 10,109 people with multiple shares and likes.
