It’s raining and we won’t stop 1.0

The noontime sunlight no longer keeps their brows frowned and the stars at night are already absent from their view. More importantly, beds become a favorite and cuddling becomes a hobby. All these are because the rainy season, although almost two months late, is finally in the Philippines.

The heavy downpour and the flooded roads often deprive the Filipinos of having a life outside their houses. However, that does not mean that their worlds are put on pause. In fact, it is during this time that life is obviously happening to them.

While in the Philippines, you can try some of the Filipinos’ ways of coping with the rain. Here are some of them:

1. An indoor marathon

Yes, yes. Rain makes people lazy; so a sports marathon is out of the list. There are, however, some ways to take advantage of this “bum-ness” – by doing the things we cannot usually do when we are in the mood to appear rational, or classy, or whatever image we want to depict.

One of which is by watching Filipino Films. Although hard to admit, some Filipino movies are not that of a high calibre; but, truly, these films have their way of making the audience laugh or cry. Therefore, come on, join the rest of the race in a marathon of LOL-ing or sobbing. Anyway, the climate will definitely make you lazy to be a film critic.

2. “Senti” mode: on

Rain can certainly bring out a person’s truest emotions. Maybe the rain’s nature to just fall and fall entices people to let their emotions just flow and be felt – and the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) knows how to translate those feelings into music.

Turn the radio or your playlist on, grab your guitar, sit beside a window, and watch the rain drops as you feel your tears flow from your eyes. That is an exaggeration, but really, the rain and OPM are your ticket to be sentimental.

3. Be artsy

You can loom band or you can learn something classic and timeless, like crochet.  This is an old craft of interlocking looped stitches using a hooked needle, which Filipino mothers use to create bags, clothes, and other items. This may require a lot of time, but the pouring outside makes it a perfect time to do something time-consuming yet fulfilling.

4. Family time

Reality check: it is flooded in most places. For some, just outside their streets, while for others, the first floor of their houses. This is the time when almost, if not all, of the family members are in the house. Filipino family bonding? Sitting on the floor and playing board or card games! Some share stories, with horror as the kids’ favorite genre.

For Filipinos, there is not really a bad, just another type of, weather. With a cup of coffee, Pinoys own the day, be it sunny or rainy. (Watch out for rainy season outdoor activities on next week’s Mango Mix.)
