Global Pinoy Pride

Great news brings joy and hope to the Filipino community as Nonito Donaire Jr. and Ariella Arida share their victories to fellow countrymen. These wins have greatly shown the Filipinos’ admirable spirit and competence in the global stage.
Boxing
Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. wins against Armenian Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan in a 10-round non-title featherweight rematch that took place last Saturday, November 9 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
In their first meeting in 2007 as flyweights, Donaire took down Darchinyan with a left blow. History does repeat itself as Donaire landed his signature left hook that sent Darchinyan to the canvas with only 1:45 left on the 9th round of the rematch.
Donaire is now back on his way to championship. It was only in April of this year, when he lost his WBO bantamweight title to Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux.
Beauty
Miss Philippines Ariella Arida is named Miss Universe 2013 3rd runner-up during a glittering pageant finale, Saturday, November 9 at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia.
Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler, won the pageant followed by Miss Spain as the 1st runner up, while Miss Ecuador and Miss Ecuador ranked 2nd and 4th respectively.
Despite criticisms and controversies, the 24-year old beauty showed admirable values and was among the top 10 beauties who garnered high number of votes. Her beauty and strong presence became her edge and even excelled in pre-pageant activities.
Without a translator, the Chemistry graduate of University of the Philippines Los Baños did well during the Question and Answer portion. When asked “What can be done about the lack of jobs for young people starting their careers around the world,” Arida replied, “We people should invest in education and that is my primary advocacy. So education is a primary source and a ticket to a better future.”
Arida and Donaire were praised by Malacañang on their successful battles, bringing pride and honor to the Philippines. They had dedicated their efforts to their countrymen to uplift the spirits of those who currently face hardships in the aftermath of two natural calamities.
