Beauty, brains and heart that is Filipino

MISS Philippines, Megan Lynne Young, was crowned Miss World 2013 during the coronation night held in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia on September 28.
This triumph is another milestone in Philippine history as the five-foot-six beauty is the first ever Filipino woman to win the prestigious crown in the 63-year old pageant. Gwendoline Ruais (2011) and Evangeline Pascual (1973), both crowned first runners-up, were the Philippines’ close finishes in the London-based pageant. Her charming beauty and winning answer won over Miss France, Marine Lorephelin and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter who finished second and third places respectively. Despite disqualification reports due to near-naked photos published in a magazine, she had overcome the controversy and has showed promising qualities of beauty queen. The much-loved beauty candidate bested 126 participants across the world and garnered several other awards during the pageant—she won the Top Model competition, ranked 4th at Multimedia Challenge and 5th at Beach Beauty contest.
The 23-year-old newly-crowned Miss World was born in Virginia, USA to a Filipino mother and American father where she spent her younger years. By the age of 10, she and her family moved to the Philippines where she continued her studies and has been in the public eye since she was 15. Her first showbiz break started when she joined Starstruck, a talent reality show in GMA 7. She then moved to ABS-CBN where she joins her younger sister, Lauren. She also appeared in several TV sitcoms, movies and has been among the chosen video jockeys for the relaunch of Channel V Philippines. Also, Young has hosted a number of shows on Studio 23, a fully owned subsidiary of ABS-CBN.
The actress-turned-beauty queen recently won the 2013 Miss World-Philippines at the coronation night held last August 18 at the Solaire Resort and Casino, Manila. The Olongapo City native has become a favorite among other 24 beauty aspirants during the pageant where she brought home a lion’s share of special awards, some of which are: Best in Fashion Runway, Miss Sports by Fila, Miss Reducin, Miss Olay, Miss Laguna, Miss Bold and Glamorous by Revlon, Miss Figlia and Miss Bench Body.
Apart from being a symbol of beauty, Young is also a National Peace Ambassador along with other prominent celebrities like Anne Curtis, Gerald Anderson, Christian Bautista, Mikael Daez and Apl de Ap. A self-confessed foodie and gamer, Megan Young sees herself as an unconventional beauty queen. The talented young woman is also an aspiring film maker, majoring in Digital Film Making at the De La Salle – College of St. Benilde.
In pageants, several controversies and criticisms arise. However, despite all that, Young have proudly shown what makes a woman—beauty, brains and heart. Her determination and devotion to help those in need is makes her stand out from the rest. Miss World 2013 is an epitome of the modern woman—one that is driven, smart and compassionate, regardless of language, race or religion.
