Three individuals honored for promoting Filipino heritage in Las VegasThree individuals who have helped promote Filipino heritage to the American community in Las Vegas were honored at a gala celebrating Filipino American History month in this city.

At the same time, two USgovernment officials Senator Harry Reid and Congresswoman Shelley Berkley were also given tribute for being "champions of Filipino American concerns."

Capping the Las Vegas celebration of Filipino American History Month is a Pinoy Festival at the Lorenzi Park last October 31st.

A Santacruzan was the highlight of the event where participants included members of several local Filipino American organizations. Tradition and trend was showcased during as participants paraded in traditional Filipino attires.

Radio talk show host Josie Harrison, who is also president of Las Vegas Phil Am Lions Club, was host of the all-day program which included dances, songs and games for the Filipinos who attended the festival.

600,000 Filipinos legal US migrants in ’08

MANILA - Filipinos comprise the second biggest number of legal permanent residents (LPRs) in the United States as of January 1, 2008 at 600,000, according to the Population Estimates released by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on October 2009.

The report, written by Nancy Rytina, said an estimated 12.6 million LPRs, which includes persons granted lawful permanent residence and green-card holders, lived in the US on the cut-off date of the report. One-half obtained LPR status 2000 or later, one-quarter became LPRs during 2005-2007.

Las Vegas Pinay is nominated for one of FWN’s 100 Most Influential Filipino Women in the US

Philanthropist, diplomat and Las Vegas resident Cielo Martinez is among the 2009 nominees for 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the US by the Filipina Women’s Network (FWN).

Nominated under the Builders and Emerging Leaders category, Ms. Martinez was cited for her leadership role in both a non-profit organization and a government agency.

Distressed Filipino teachers in US get more support

The Filipino teachers in Louisiana who have accused their recruiter of labor contract violations continue to gain support in the United States after a widely circulated newspaper detailed their suffering.

USA Today published in its Oct. 28 issue an article on the teachers, focusing on three—Ingrid Cruz, Ian Cainglet and Luzellene Perez—who borrowed up to P50,000 to be able to go to Louisiana but ended up deeper in debt.
