FilAm poet Al Robles in 28th SF Asian American Film Fest

SAN FRANCISCO - Poet, activist, and Fillmore District native Al Robles will be honored on March 14 at 12:30 p.m. in San Francisco’s Fillmore Plaza on Fillmore and O’Farrell Streets with music, poetry, and remembrance.

Supervisor Eric Mar will lead community members in recognizing the son of the Fillmore who is memorialized with a plaque in Fillmore Plaza.

29% Filipino WWII vets get lump-sum benefit

SACRAMENTO - Only 29 percent of Filipino WWII veterans granted a lump-sum payment for their service in last year’s economic stimulus bill have received their federal benefit, a news release from the office of Senator Leland Yee (Democrat-San Francisco/San Mateo) said.

Yee thus introduced Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 25 to call on President Barack Obama, Congress, and the US Department of Military Affairs to expedite the funding and lessen the amount of required documentation for eligible Filipino and Filipino American veterans to receive payments under the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund.

First Hypnotherapy Book by Filipino

CALIFORNIA — The first book on hypnotherapy by Filipino is off the press and now available at Amazon.com and selected bookstores.   

The book, an introductory manual to hypnotherapy, explains the basis of therapeutic applications of hypnosis, and explores the best-known hypnotic induction methods and techniques of hypnotherapy.

FilAms ask Obama to help free ‘Morong 43’

LOS ANGELES - Fil-Am activists wrote US President Barack Obama an open letter asking that the so-called Morong 43, or the health workers who were arrested in Morong February 6 and detained thereafter, be released.

Last week, the delegation of FilAms, including Melissa Roxas, who was also abducted in the Philippines last year, also held a mid-day protest outside the Philippine consulate here to demand the immediate release of the 43, said Bayan-USA vice chair Kuusela Hilo said in a statement.

Deadline for WWII FilAm vets’ compensation nears

The deadline for the submission of claims by World War II for compensation under the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund is less than a week away on February 16, 2010.

In many interviews before she left the country, former United States Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney said the deadline cannot be extended as the law that provided for the new one-time benefit—American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009—specified the deadline.
