With Lunar New Year approaching on Friday, February 16, many places in Southern California are undergoing preparations to ring in the “Year of the Dog.”
One of them being Westfield Santa Anita in Arcadia, the premier shopping center in the San Gabriel Valley.
On Thursday, January 25, the mall announced the highlights of this year’s festivities, including its sixth annual Lunar New Year public celebration event on Sunday, February 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will be filled with festivities, such as live performances and entertainment, lion and dragon dances, calligraphy demonstrations, children’s crafts activities and games, red envelope giveaways, as well as fantastic promotions and treats from the center’s shops and restaurants.
Starting on Saturday, January 27, there will be traditional Chinese music played every Saturday until February 17.
“We invite everyone to join our celebration in February,” Debbie Oung, marketing coordinator at Westfield Santa Anita, told the Asian Journal. “Being a part of the community is so important to us and we really want to represent the San Gabriel Valley and make sure Westfield Santa Anita is the place to celebrate Lunar New Year.”
Leading up to the grand festival, the center will host a number of exciting Lunar New Year activities such as traditional Zither and Flute performances every Saturday starting on January 27th, to kick off the Lunar New Year. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, renowned calligrapher Hirokazu Kosaka, artist Wakana Kimura and calligrapher Kuniharu Yoshida, will be creating a spectacular large-scale calligraphy painting to celebrate the zodiac year animal at the Center.
“San Gabriel Valley is home to many Asian Americans, and we know that Lunar New Year is an important holiday in our community,” Ramon Oseguera, general manager of Westfield Santa Anita said in a statement. “We want to continue to be the place that brings the community together, and celebrate these traditions with everyone.”
This year, Westfield Santa Anita is partnering with several local community organizations to bring new experiences to the Center. The Center is continuing its partnership with the local school districts such as Arcadia Unified, Rosemead, Pasadena Unified, and Temple City Unified, and is revamping the Art Displays into a “Year of the Dog” art competition. Westfield will be giving away three $250 gift cards to each winner, and will be printing the large-scale winning pieces to be displayed at the center.
In addition, Westfield’s ongoing partnership with First General Bank (FGB) and Asian Pacific Community Fund (APCF) will feature Westfield Santa Anita’s new visual element, the Shadowbox display, in Center Court. This plays on the traditional Chinese shadow puppets. FGB will donate $25 to APCF for each unique and qualified Instagram post of the Shadowbox up to $5,000. Posts must include #FirstGeneralBank, #WestfieldLNY and #APCF, and must also follow @WestfieldSantaAnita.
Other decorations shoppers will notice at the mall include lanterns and a dog statue and red umbrellas hanging from the ceiling.
“We are also thrilled to welcome our amazing partners at the Chinese American Museum. They have several displays on site this year, including the food displays and traditional props which you can find on level 2,” Oung said.
In addition, select retailers at the Center are helping their customers start the year off right with special Lunar New Year promotions and specials.
Kiehl’s is offering their customers four deluxe samples with any $85 purchase.
Somi Somi, a new soft serve dessert shop known for their beautifully crafted Taiyaki soft serve, will be hosting two Lunar New Year Instagram promotions and giveaways; follow @WestfieldSantaAnita on Instagram for more information.
