Veronica De La Cruz’s son baptized

FILIPINO-American MSNBC news anchor and new mom Veronica De La Cruz recently had her first child, Hartley Eric De La Cruz baptized on May 19 in Nevada.

Born on March 13 in New York City, Hartley Eric was named after Veronica’s late brother, Eric, who passed away in 2009 awaiting a heart transplant delayed by insurance denials.

Hartley Eric was baptized and blessed at St. Thomas More in Henderson, Nevada, Veronica said to the Asian Journal.

It was the same church in which Veronica and her family said goodbye to Eric.

“It is also the same church in which I prayed to my brother Eric last July 4th at his memorial mass,” Veronica said to the Asian Journal. “Shortly after, I found out I was pregnant with Hartley.”

Rather than having a priest sprinkle holy water on her son, Veronica said Hartley was fully immersed and dipped in a tub of holy water three times.

“[He] was not phased at all,” she said. “He impressed us with how stoic, calm and peaceful he could be and everyone applauded. It was a beautiful ceremony.”

Veronica said Hartley has eight Godparents, whom she believes will help her son spiritually in his life’s journey.

“I want him to model himself after those who have strong morals, ethics and values,” shes aid. “[We want] to make sure Hartley practices Catholicism in his daily life is important to us and we are excited to watch him grow into a fine young man with a strong moral compass.”
