FEASTIBAL: The  summer of sarap

FilAm Arts to hold culinary night in Hollywood on Aug. 29

LOS ANGELES – Summer is in full swing. The glorious weather, diverse food scene, and eclectic enclaves of Los Angeles all call for great adventures to be had. And if you’re running out of ideas for your next night out, we got you covered.

FilAm Arts (FAA), the premiere Filipino-American culture and arts organization in Southern California, proudly presents its Summer 2017 offering – FEASTIBAL: The Summer of Sarap. It will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 29th, 6:30 p.m. at the modern Filipino eatery, Barkada Restaurant & Lounge. It is located on Vine Street, just a few blocks south of Sunset Boulevard. Tickets are $50 per person.

With the emergence of the Filipino food movement as the next big food revolution in America, FEASTIBAL will showcase what ‘sarap’ truly means. ‘Sarap’ is Tagalog for “delicious” or “great tasting.” In common vernacular, it can also refer to exhilarating and thrilling experiences.

“Ang sarap, sir!” is the only appropriate reaction to a big spoonful of chicken adobo or pork sisig.

Tambay with the Barkada

According to the organizers, the idea was to bring together Fil-Am Angelenos to tambay – the Filipino word for “hangout” – at the aptly-named restaurant.

“We want you to bring your barkada to the actual Barkada Restaurant in Hollywood!” said FAA interim executive director Tina Salonga-Bulchand.

The word barkada loosely translates to “group of friends,” or what kids nowadays call “squad” or “cliqué.”

Barkada Restaurant & Lounge will host the event and offer a few off-menu Filipino tapas. (No, not beef tapa. Tapas, as in food served on small plates. But also, beef tapa.)

Historic Filipinotown favorite’s smokehouse, The Park’s Finest, will serve up its famed barbecue and chicken dishes. And Chef Sally Camacho of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef: Just Dessert” will proffer her sweet twists to classic Filipino treats.

Coincidentally, the owners of Barkada Restaurant and The Park’s Finest are an in an actual barkada together.   They grew up in the LA Filipino enclaves of East Hollywood and Echo Park, frequenting SIPA, FPAC and other places where Pinoy youth gathered.

Yes, the irony is not lost on us. But that makes it all the more fun. The genuine camaraderie behind the restaurant’s concept makes them all the more relatable.

“We are very proud of the owners of The Park’s Finest and Barkada,” said FAA chairperson Kat Carrido-Bonds. “They are born and bred Los Angeles,” she added.

While the restaurateurs may not have imagined growing up to become business owners, they do manage to hold it down for Pinoy Los Angeles during this great big boom for the Filipino food movement.

The FPAC connection

This collaboration between the entrepreneurs and the FAA was born out of the former’s strong ties to the Filipino community in Los Angeles. As longtime supporters of FilAm Arts and their flagship project, the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC), they did not hesitate to get onboard for this event.

FAA board member Elaine Dolalas said that FPAC has always supported the culinary arts.

“FEASTIBAL continues FPAC’s tradition of highlighting Filipino American chefs and their updated and unique take on Filipino, American, and Asian food,” Dolalas said.

According to FAA officials, FEASTIBAL will serve as a fundraiser in support of this year’s FPAC, which will be held on Oct. 14th, Saturday, at the Echo Park Lake. Since 2006, FPAC has featured a culinary arts pavilion that eventually paved the way for today’s Filipino food movement.
