Coldplay salutes US immigrants in new lyric video

BRITISH rock band Coldplay celebrates the contributions of immigrants to the United States in their new lyric video titled “Miracles (Someone Special),” which also features Big Sean.

The video also showcases America’s long history of welcoming immigrants from all over the world.

It features photographs of immigrants arriving at New York City’s Ellis Island from 19th to 20th century slowly coming in to life through a live photo effect.

Ellis Island is known as the country’s busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 until 1954, being a gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the United States.

“My father said never give up, son,” the band’s frontman Chris Martin sings at the start of the song before mentioning famous icons like Muhammad Ali, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

They were born out of nothing, but eventually became some of the most influential people in history. The secret, as Martin sings, is that they are “not scared to be strong.”

Later, the song names other inspiring figures such as Amelia Earheart, Joan of Arc, Rosa Parks and Mother Teresa.

“You’ve got bright in your brains and lightning in your veins, you’ll go higher than they’ve ever gone,” Martin sings at the chorus.

Rapper Big Sean recalls the obstacles he faced while chasing his dreams and living in contemporary America such as overcoming financial debt and confronting the pressures of the society.

“Prove it to them or you prove it to yourself, but honestly it’s better if you do it for yourself,” he raps.

The song whispers some words of motivation, encouraging its audience to not only be like any of the great names mentioned, but exceed what they have reached.

“Miracles (Someone Special)” is part of Coldplay’s new Kaleidoscope EP which also features “Hypnotised,” “All I Can Think About Is You,” the Brian Eno collaboration “Aliens” and a remix of their collaborative hit with the Chainsmokers, “Something Just Like This.”

Coldplay has long been active on including humanitarian causes in their tracks and this is the second song to raise social issues from the same five-track EP.

Earlier this month, Coldplay released the track “Aliens” and its proceeds will support Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), a charity that rescues migrants in peril while trying to cross the Mediterranean.

The five-track release follows the band’s 2015 LP “A Head Full of Dreams,” which the band had hinted could be its final full-length album.

The band will be on the North American leg of their A Head Full Of Dreams Tour until November before heading to Brazil and Argentina.
