Aga Muhlach: ‘Lea Salonga is the one that got away’

A LETTER professing Aga Muhlach’s love for former co-star and girlfriend Lea Salonga resurfaced and gained an overwhelming amount of appreciation on the Internet.

Muhlach’s letter to Salonga, which was included in the “Playlist Souvenir Book:  A Celebration of Lea Salonga’s 35 years” published in 2013 for her 35th showbiz anniversary concert, received massive attention after @loudestdork tweeted an excerpt of the letter.

Before Muhlach’s marriage to Charlene Gonzales, the actor was last romantically linked with former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres.

But years after, he revealed his love for Salonga writing that, “Lea is the one that got away. And she never knew.”

The actor, who said he was once a young man on fire with passion, admitted his never ending love and gratitude to Salonga, his former co-star in “Sana Maulit Muli” as Agnes and “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal” as Sandy.

“To me, Lea was Sandy—ethereal, aloof, unattainable; my very heart’s desire. Lea was Agnes — vulnerable yet remote, kind yet callous, constantly engaged in a battle of wills. And I loved Agnes and Sandy and Lea in equal measure,” Muhlach said.

The actor also regarded his role with Salonga in “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal” in 1992 as “the right movie with the right girl at the right time” that saved his career which was at that time on the brink of failure.

“Lea, bakit labis kitang mahal? It’s because you are, and have always been, so real. Walang kaplastikan, walang arte, walang drama. Pinakita mo sa akin ang totoong pagkatao mo. You are the real thing,” said Muhlach.

He expressively described former Salonga’s voice as “transcendent, resplendent, indisputable, incomparable.”

“Her voice is as clear as a bell, as breathtaking as the sunshine,” Muhlach added.

Their love and respect for each other remained even though their onscreen love story did not happen in real life.

“I love her still, but perhaps because she got away, I have her as a friend now, and so I will always have her,” Muhlach said.

Both of them are now happy with their separate lives. Salonga is married to Robert Charles Chien and has a daughter, Nicole Beverly.   Muhlach, on the other hand, has been married to Gonzales, and they have their twins — Atasha and Andres.  (With reports from Larizza de Vera/AJPress)
