IN the Philippines, one of the signs that Christmas is near is the multi-colored parol in the windows of homes, up in the lampposts of streets or even in commercial establishments. From its simple design in the older days, the star-shaped decor has evolved into many different shapes, sizes and design; as well as the materials it is made out of. Since the parol is a staple of celebrating the holiday, many Filipinos living all over the world have brought this tradition with them.
Here in Los Angeles, the Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council held its 8th annual parol parade on Friday, Dec. 4, featuring an array of parols decorated by community members and local organizations.
