THE search for the cast of the international production of “The Sound of Music” is over as the auditionees who triumphantly showcased their talents in acting, singing, and dancing have been announced.

Eighteen Filipino kids clinched the roles of the captain’s seven children. Jia Ruth Lauren Condino (Taguig City), Alysha Mari Africa (Parañaque City) and Faline Dorado (Pasig City) will alternately bring into life the character of Gretl, the smallest and the cutest von Trapp.
Tory Gil Emilio Cortez (Pasig City), Dean Adhiel Angelia (Noveleta, Cavite) and James Christian Hess (Makati City) will act as Kurt. Meanwhile, Samantha Lagman (Sta. Ana, Manila), Leani Columna (Las Piñas) and Princess Aliyah Rabara (Marilao, Bulacan) will substitute as Marta.
To perform the role of Brigitta were Krystal Brimner (Laguna), Rayne Yssibel Cortez (Pasig City) and Sophia Isabella Reyes (Marikina City). On the other hand, Gwyneth Jearei Dorado (Pasig City), Quinn O’Hara (Biñan, Laguna) and Angelica Mabuting (Malolos, Bulacan) will act as Louisa.
The kids described their audition experience as “fun and exciting.” Brimner said, “I really enjoyed it. It brought out the best in me. It was really exciting.” Aside from being fun, Tory admitted that it was also “nerve-wracking.”
Lead actress Carmen Pretorius believes on the talent of the kids. “They’re all quite good and adorable too. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them make it big,” she said.
“Always watch and learn. Learn from them, soak it all up like a sponge. Those are valuable moments, no one can teach you that in a textbook or at school,” advised Pretorius to her young co-stars.
“Never forget your passion for what you do. Don’t forget that it’s supposed to be fun. Find the magic in every single minute,” she added.
The Sound of Music is about Maria, a young novice who became the governess of Captain von Trapp’s seven children. She changed the life of the family through music, and eventually, the widowed captain married her. The new family crossed the Austrian mountains to escape tensions prior to World War II.
The musical was written by team Rodgers and Hammerstein, a legendary music-and-lyrics team, who was also behind the hits “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.” (With reports from Rappler and Manila Bulletin)
