The Philippine Consulate General (PCG), Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) and Philippine BPO Council held a forum entitled Building a Balanced Sourcing Portfolio: The Right Process at the Right Location with the Right Vendor at the Philippine Center. Participants from information technology, finance and consulting companies as well as not-for-profit organizations attended the event.
During her welcome remarks, Consul General Cecilia Rebong pointed out the major achievements of the Philippine business processing industry (BPO) industry, which is estimated to have generated revenues of $9 billion and 600,000 jobs across the Philippines at the end of 2010. She also highlighted the IBM’s 4th Annual Global Location Trends Report, released in October 2010, naming the Philippines as the number one choice in the world for business support functions (such as shared services and business process outsourcing).
The forum was facilitated by Ms. Judy Arteche-Carr (Advisory Board, Philippine BPO Council, and CEO, Arteche Global Group) and moderated by Ms. Roxanna Wall (Executive Director, UBS Financial Services). The panelists were Mr. Uday Singh (Principal, A.T. Kearney), Mr. Kurt Vandenberg (Chief Information Officer, Assured Guaranty) and Mr. Donald Mones (Vice President, McGraw Hill).
In an interactive discussion with the audience, the panelists shared their thoughts on the major decision criteria for sourcing strategies: location, capability, sustainability, talent pool skill sets - combined with cultural, political and financial risks. The decision criteria, according to the panelists, have become more complex with today’s evolving global landscape and increased regulatory measures.
Lastly, they elaborated on the challenges that companies face in trying to use the latest trends in technology-enabled services (e.g. use of cloud computing and social networking platforms).
In the course of the discussion, they gave positive remarks on their experience with the BPO/ITO companies based in the Philippines.
SPI Global, the largest Filipino-owned BPO firm, and EXL, a US transformation and outsourcing company, were the event’s gold and bronze corporate sponsors, respectively.
The forum was the first joint activity of PCG, PTIC and the Philippine BPO Council for the year 2011. During the last four years, they have been co-sponsoring various activities to promote the Philippines as a major outsourcing destination.
