LAS VEGAS – It was a bittersweet boxing weekend especially for Filipino boxing fans.

As many celebrated Manny Pacquiao’s historic achievement of becoming the first boxer to win seven titles in as many divisions, there were some people quietly concerned about the health of Bantamweight title contender Z Gorres.

The 27-year-old Gorres suffered a subdural hematoma (blood clot in the brain) after being knocked down by Luis Melendez in the 10th round of their match at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino last November 13. Gorres quickly got up from the initial knockdown but was stunned with a vicious right cross to the head again with a few seconds remaining in the last round.

The 27-year-old Gorres won the bout by unanimous decision but after collapsing in the ring, he was fighting for his life.

He was rushed to the University Medical Center Hospital where Dr. Michael Seiff performed emergency brain surgery to remove the blood from his brain and reduce its swelling.

He was then placed in an induced coma to stabilize his condition.

Miracle

As of Tuesday, November 17, Gorres is recovering, according to reports from ABS-CBN.

Phone calls and text messages to ALA Promotions Michael Aldeguer were not returned as of press time.

Aldeguer’s father, Tony Aldeguer of the ALA Boxing Gym, reported the good news regarding Gorres to ABS-CBN.

"As of 3am Philippine time, my son talked to me and texted me that Z Gorres is recovering very well. Nung tinanong siya ng mga doctors at nurses, he made the thumbs up," said the elder Aldeguer.

He added that Gorres is conscious, the fighter’s brain is responding, and his vital organs are stabilized. He commented that Gorres’ recovery is "very fast, quite miraculous."

Gorres’ wife, Duchess (who was not in Las Vegas), told radio dzMM that she the head nurse at the UMC Hospital informed her that Z is awake and responding.

"Binigyan ng instruction [si Z], nag-thumbs up, nag-response po siya. That’s a good sign from him po," said Duchess to dzMM.
