Today is a day of remembrance and renewal for the global Filipino.

We join our kababayans at home in remembering the heroism and sacrifice of our forebears, who laid the foundations for the establishment of Asia's first Republic on 12 June 1898.

This is a democratic legacy which we, as a state and as a nation, are truly proud of. It is a legacy, which we commit to further strengthen as manifested in the successful conduct of the first ever automated elections in the Philippines and in two of our Foreign ServicePosts - in Hongkong and in Singapore.

It is a legacy, which Filipinos in every corner of the globe continue to uphold as demonstrated by their votes.

The theme for the 112th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence,

"Kalayaan 2010: Tagumpay ng Bayan", highlights the many successesand triumphs we have achieved as a nation. It also reminds us of the many goals and dreams we have yet to achieve for our country.

Today, we renew our pledge to continue doing our part in building a more peaceful, progressiveand prosperous Philippines.

The Philippines has advanced steadily towards greater growth, guided by a common vision for a better future and powered by the sinew and might of the hard working and dedicated Filipino, including our more than eight million Filipino workers abroad.

I thank you, our overseas Filipinos, for your demonstrated commitment to help uphold, protect and promote our Filipino heritage. I am confident that you will continue to do your part in contributing to the full development of your motherland.

Mabuhayang Pilipinas at ang diwa ng kalayaanf Mabuhayang sambayanang Pilipino!

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
President of the Philippines
