Why nursing shortage key to US economy

MANILA -  The nursing shortage in the United States is so critical that the Ombudsman for Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recommended the facilitation of the migration process of foreign nurses there.

A report report on the situation said the US economy, considered to be in recession, depended a lot on the operation of hospitals.

Dayo: Showcasing local animation

MANILA -  “Dayo” literally means foreigner or stranger in Filipino.

Dayo is also the title of a first full-length animated film entry in the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival. It is Filipino-made.

Holidays bring respite from bad news

MANILA - As testament to the Filipino penchant for laughter and humor in times of crisis, stock market traders managed to crack a few jokes despite the bearish mood in the stock market this year to dispel an expected tougher year in 2009.

"Merry Christmas and a Happy New (Record) Low Year,” said Eagle Equities Inc. president Joseph Roxas, referring to the spate of record low stock prices this year.

GMA's Christmas gift: Keeping RP afloat

MANILA - If there was any gift President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo could give Filipinos, it would be her unrelenting efforts to keep the country afloat at the height of the global financial crisis, a Palace official said Wednesday.

"I feel that if there is anything that the President can show people it is the fact that we are able to prepare ourselves at what could be a worse economic situation," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told a press conference.

Filipinos see ‘happy’ Christmas--survey

MANILA - Most Filipinos expect a happy Christmas celebration this year, and “lechon (roasted pig)” salad, pasta and ham top the list of the “most anticipated dishes” in the Yuletide feast, according to the latest survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS).

The fourth-quarter survey also found that for most Filipinos, money and clothing were among the best Christmas gifts they ever received. Three out of every five adult Filipinos (63 percent) expected a happy Christmas celebration, while only eight percent expected it to be sad, and about a third (27 percent) said it would be neither happy nor sad.
