MANILA - Heroes walk among us and they don’t wear costumes. They’re just in plain site, trying to make a difference not for themselves but for others. It’s a domino effect that should inspire and encourage people to act and do the same.

Efren Penaflorida is a 28-year old teacher and social worker whose day job is teaching at the Palmridge School in Cavite. He looks no different than most people of the same profession, doing something that is seen as both a public service and as passion.

House speaker eyes Pacman ‘talk’ in Vegas

MANILA - Aside from being a regular spectator to the boxing fights of Manny Pacquiao, House Speaker Prospero Nograles plans to engage the people’s champ in a noble endeavor to dispute criticisms that several congressmen are insensitive for pursuing the US trip amid the plight of their constituents who have been devastated by the typhoons.

“As a matter of fact if I talk to Pacquiao and I will tell him malaki naman ang panalo mo, magbigay ka naman ng malaki para typhoon victims (since you will get a huge sum, you can donate to typhoon victims),” Nograles told reporters in a news conference Monday.

Villar running mate has ‘3M’ factor

MANILA - A spokesman of the Nacionalista Party has dropped hints about the person Senator Manuel Villar Jr. has picked as his vice presidential bet for the 2010 elections.

Adel Tamano, one of the party’s spokesmen, said on Monday that Villar’s running mate possessed the "3M" qualities -- "maganda" (beautiful), "matalino" (intelligent), and "maka-kalikasan" (pro-environment).

Lacson confirms VP offer from Escudero

MANILA - Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson revealed on Monday that he was offered to become the running mate of fellow senator and presidential aspirant Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero in next year’s elections.

Lacson said the offer was made two months ago or before Escudero announced he was leaving the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).

Poll machines still worry Comelec chief

MANILA  - Until all the 82,000 machines to be used in the first nationwide automated elections are delivered and tested, Commission on Elections Chairman Jose Melo would be having sleepless nights.

Melo admitted that despite the assurance given by the winning consortium Smartmatic-Total Information Management (TIM), he is still worried that the machines may not be ready by election day.
