Aquino tops Oct. survey of presidential bets

MANILA - Liberal Party’s Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III emerged on the top spot of the October 2009 Pulse Asia survey with the “big lead” over other presidential hopefuls for next year’s elections.

The nationwide survey, conducted from October 22 to 30, was undertaken solely by Pulse Asia on the “Filipinos’ Presidential Preference for the May 2010 Elections.”

Ralph Recto, Vilma Santos join Liberal Party

MANILA -  Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto and former Senator Ralph Recto are joining the Liberal Party (LP) and support the team-up of Senators Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Manuel “Mar” Roxas II in the 2010 elections.

At the convention, Roxas also announced the LP’s senatorial slate composed of Recto, former congressman Neric Acosta, former Senator Franklin Drilon, Bukidnon Representative Teofisto Guingona III, Akbayan Representative Risa Hontiveros, detained general Danilo Lim, and former Senator Serge Osmena.

RP Gov’t slashes PAGASA funds for next year

MANILA - Despite the series of deadly storms that battered the country, the national government has cut the budget of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) for 2010.

Lillibeth Gonzales, chief of the agency’s finance, management and planning division, said they submitted a P1.7-billion budget to the Department of Budget and Management. The amount would cover personnel and maintenance expenses including capital outlays for the purchase of new equipment.

91 Filipino peacekeepers in Darfur honored

MANILA - The United Nations has awarded peacekeeping medals to 91 Philippine police officers who serve as advisers with the UN-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (Unamid), the Philippine Mission to the UN in New York said in a statement Monday.

Unamid Joint Special Representative Henry Anyidoho commended the Filipino peacekeepers for their “disciplined approach to their duties, selflessness, and substantial contribution to the peace process in Darfur.”
