Pacquiao boxing match draws blood donors

CABUYAO - The live feed of the boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto drew at least 500 residents to a school gymnasium, as well as blood donations, on Sunday.

The screening was held at the gymnasium of the St. Vincent Academy in Barangay (village) Mamatid here and was sponsored by the school's owner Sim Chavez.

Mayon sends ash falling on Albay towns, villages

LEGAZPI CITY -  Restive Mayon Volcano blew ash into the air and into towns that are near it early Wednesday, according to volcanologists.

Alex Baloloy, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) science research analyst, said the mild explosion was a clear sign that magma was rising in the volcano’s crater.

Mayon Volcano erupts

LEGAZPI CITY -  The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded an ash explosion in Mayon Volcano early Wednesday, which caused ash fall in Albay towns located southwest and northwest of the volcano.

"The explosion, which occurred at around 1:58 a.m., is a clear sign of magma intrusion toward the summit crater of the volcano," said Alex Baloloy, Phivolcs science research analyst.

Romualdezes back Gibo, Bongbong in 2010

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte - Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez expressed support for the presidential bid of Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro of Lakas-Kampi, as well as the senatorial bid of his cousin, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., who has been allied with the Nacionalista Party.

"I will toe the (party) line. I belong to the administration party," Romualdez said on Wednesday, unmindful of the defections by some of the party members who included Biliran Governor Rogelio Espina.

Comelec, Smartmatic start survey of provinces

BAGUIO CITY - Officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) have started surveying the provinces to check the reliability of power supply, Internet connectivity and mobile phone signals to ensure that the 2010 elections would go on smoothly.

Comelec Commissioner Armando Velasco on Monday said the poll body and representatives of Smartmatic, the firm that won the contract for poll automation, would know by December the problem areas and would start preparing contingency measures.
