'Pepeng' destroys P75M worth of crops in Bicol

PILI, Camarines Sur - Typhoon “Pepeng” destroyed some P75-million worth of crops in four provinces in Bicol with rice production having the heaviest toll, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Marilyn V. Sta. Catalina, DA Bicol director for operations and regulatory, reported Monday that some P65.7-million worth of rice in various stages of growth in some 1,968 ha were greatly affected by flooding in the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes.

Earthquake strikes near Mindanao

COTABATO CITY - A magnitude 6.6 quake struck at the ocean near the southern Philippines Sunday night, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake was recorded at 6:58 p.m., the epicenter was traced 57 miles southwest of this city.

35 quakes rock Mayon anew

LEGAZPI CITY - At least 35 volcanic earthquakes jolted Mayon Volcano on Thursday and Friday, the highest recorded seismic event since July when the volcano started showing signs of restiveness, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Friday.

The surge in the number of volcanic tremors started in the Wednesday, with 14 tremors recorded during the Wednesday-to-Thursday monitoring period. Only one tremor was recorded in the previous 24-hour period from 6 a.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Laguna de Bay rising; lakeside towns warned

MANILA - If Typhoon “Pepeng" dumps even half of the rains that Tropical Storm Ondoy brought to Metro Manila on Sept. 26, the water level of Laguna de Bay may break its all-time record of 14.62 meters on the lake authority’s guage, possibly swamping more lakeside barangays in Metro Manila and Rizal and Laguna provinces.

This projection was made at a news briefing by Edgar Manda, chair of the Laguna Lake Development Authority, as he recommended the preemptive evacuation of some 100,000 people, specifically those living on the shorelines of Taguig, Cainta, Pasig, Taytay and Muntinlupa.

US soldiers pulled out of Sulu school project

MANILA - US soldiers were pulled out of a school project in Jolo, Sulu, and their movements limited to a camp following the explosion on Tuesday that killed two of them and a Filipino Marine.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines has also doubled the Americans’ security and reinforced detachments and deployed additional quick-reaction forces in Jolo, AFP spokesperson Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr. told reporters at Camp Aguinaldo Wednesday.
