RP stands tallest in war against poverty

MANILA - If nothing else, Filipinos are standing tall and proud in the fight to end destitution.

Topping even India and its billion population, the Philippines has earned the world record for the largest group of people ever mobilized to “Stand Up and Take Action” against poverty, the United Nations announced Wednesday.

Council sees exports at $84B in 2010

Exports are projected to reach $84.4 billion in 2010 in a new three-year Export Development Plan that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has approved, the government-private sector Export Development Council (EDC) said.

The plan puts export earnings at $64.2 billion in 2008, up nine percent from $58.8 billion in 2007.

Efforts underway to save Rizal watershed

TANAY, Rizal – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Rotary International District 3780 have joined hands to rehabilitate the Kaliwa Watershed in Tanay, Rizal.

“The Kaliwa Watershed is a strategic area that needs immediate rehabilitation and enhancement of its biodiversity, not only of the Municipality of Tanay and the Province of Rizal but for the residents of Metro Manila as well,” the DENR and the rotary members said in their memorandum of understanding signed Wednesday.

Philippines up in IT competitiveness

MANILA - The Philippines has improved its ranking slightly in the second edition of the IT Competitiveness index sponsored by the Business Software Alliance (BSA).

The index is an assessment of the IT environments of 66 countries and indicates the extent to which the economies enable the IT sector to grow.

2 Benguet miners found alive a week after being trapped

BENGUET - Two miners were found alive Monday afternoon, September 29, a week after they and 14 others entered a mine tunnel in Itogon, Benguet that was swamped by floodwaters spawned by typhoon “Nina” (international codename: Hagupit).

Antonio “Ngitit” Pagulayan, 22, and Jose Panyo Jr., 22, were rescued at 3:15 p.m. from Shaft 114 level 700 of the gold field owned by Benguet Mining Corporation at Purok 7, Gold Field Poblacion, Itogon, Neoman dela Cruz, regional director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), said in a phone interview.
