IRS alert – protect your self from email scams

TAX scams via email have become widespread over the last year. Thieves have become bolder. Their bogus IRS website has improved graphics and looks so real that even a veteran IRS auditor unwittingly logged into it. If he can be duped into this bogus website, what about ordinary folks like you and me?

The IRS is again warning the public about scams that continue to claim victims all across the country.

Scammers send emails to lure victims to give up their personal and financial information. The crooks use this information to file tax returns in your name or steal your money. The thieves demand payment on a pre-paid debit card or by wire transfer. Here are IRS tips to protect you from scammers and thieves.

What to Do If You Receive a Phishing Email:

• Don’t reply to message.

• Don’t open attachments.

• Don’t click on any links.

• Forward the email to [email protected].

• Then delete it.

How to Protect Yourself Against Scams And Identity Theft:

• Don’t give personal information over the phone, through the mail or internet unless you initiated the contact and are sure of the recipient.

• Protect your personal computers by using firewalls.

• Use anti-spam, anti-virus software.

• Update security patches periodically.

• Change passwords for internet accounts periodically.

• Don’t carry your Social Security card or documents that include your Social Security number.

• Don’t give a business your SSN or ITIN just because they ask. Give it only when required.

• Check your credit report every year.

• Do not trash old tax returns, bank statements, or other records with sensitive data.

• Shred records with your social security number, bank account, and credit card numbers.
