Are we out of it yet?

"The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore."

— Van Gogh

If early indicators are to be believed and depending on media credibility, we may have well gotten past the worst of the recessionary storm. Economists and the general public feared the worst if the US slipped into a depression. Fortunately we have learned a lot from Hoover’s "deer in the headlights" response to something similar in the late 1920’s to know that measures need to be taken to forestall a depression redux from happening. We had cash for clunkers, home improvement tax rebates and others to keep the US economic engine humming. Kudos to Bernanke and to the Obama Administration then! Let’s not deceive ourselves though. Our treasury is depleted. And more needs to be done.

Why wait until your debt problems become a financial emergency?

Are you struggling with unpaid bills, lawsuits or perhaps an imminent judgment or wage garnishment by a creditor? Are you afraid of what creditors may do to you, your property or your assets? Most people have no clue so sometimes, the tendency is to ignore their debt problems and pretend that they don’t exist. The truth, however, is that ignoring your debt problems can be the worst mistake you’ll ever make.

People with debt problems often act like they can run away from their own shadow. Their shadow follows them wherever they go and whatever they do. They could change jobs, start another business, move to a new neighborhood or a different state but they just can’t get away from their "shadow" no matter how hard they try.

Ana Co Puno: LA’s Empress of Concerts

Lastweekend, the Fil-Am entertainment scene was all abuzz about the historical tandem of two concert giants Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera.

When Starmedia Entertainment first announced this unique, powerhouse offering in Los Angeles, there was irrepressible excitement among live concert-goers!

Tickets to the concert were sold out in a flash and people who could not get tickets were really clamoring for it.

On concert night last Oct. 17, the crowd did not disappoint. The venue, Pasadena Civic Center, was jam-packed from the outside all the way in.

Should employees be paid for work done ‘off the clock?’

Q: I WORK as a driver/courier for a service-oriented company. I am often asked by my supervisor to pick up packages an hour or two before my regular clock in time. However, my supervisor told me to always clock-in at my regular clock in time. So even though I work an extra one or two hours every day, I am only paid 8 hours and not 9 or 10 hours. Should I be paid for the work that I do outside of my regular scheduled hours?

A: Yes, you should be paid for the extra hours you worked even though such work was done before your scheduled hours. Such extra hours are termed "off the clock" hours because they occur outside an employee’s regular work hours or shift. In this instance, you are additionally entitled to the overtime rate of 1½ times your regular rate for any work in excess of 8 hours per day.

Delaware catholic diocese files for bankruptcy relief

THE Catholic diocese of Wilmington, Delaware filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week on the eve of a civil trial involving clergy sex abuse. With this bankruptcy filing, the first Catholic diocese to file in the East Coast, the Wilmington diocese joins six other dioceses, which have sought bankruptcy court protection under the weight of clergy sex abuse lawsuits leveled against the Catholic Church. Other Catholic dioceses that have filed for bankruptcy protection in the past are dioceses in San Diego, Portland, Oregon, Spokane, Washington, Tucson, Arizona, Davenport, Iowa and Fairbanks, Alaska.

Certainly, clergy sexual molestation is the work of the devil to discredit and damage the Catholic Church. The church now has a zero tolerance of sexual predators masquerading as priests. Hopefully, it will eventually rid itself of the very small minority of errant priests who have no business being men of the cloth and give the majority of holy men who are truly ministers of Christ in this world a bad name.
