Christmas in a Box

Christmas in a Box

It’s that merry, merry time of the year when hundreds of thousands of balikbayan boxes from Filipinos around the world are being delivered across the Philippines to make Christmas merrier for loved ones back home.

While it’s a normal thing for Filipino families to receive balikbayan boxes throughout the year, receiving those beloved boxes filled with goodies (and with that unexplainable, unique smell of the “first world”—“amoy-Amerika”) during the holiday season is especially more exciting because it is expected to contain not just the usual coffee, chocolates and canned goods, but imported Christmas gifts and treats as well. Thus, overseas Filipinos, especially Filipino Americans (who send the most number of boxes back home), are challenged to send more and spend more for the holiday boxes. Not easy to do during these hard times. But, as one nurse in LA admitted, “kahit may recession, siyempre non-negotiable ang pagpapadala ng balikbayan box sa pamilya ko. Lalo na ngayong Pasko. Kung hirap tayo dito sa America, mas hirap naman sila duon. Kaya nga, all the more akong nagsisikap na padalhan sila ng special treats and gifts this holiday season.”

Giving the Best Gift

Christmas is a season of giving. It is the time of year when we give gifts and share our blessings to our loved ones and friends. For most people, giving gifts has been a part of their holiday tradition.

However, gift giving at Christmas is becoming more of a social ritual or an obligation than a meaningful expression of fondness. The budget looms large for the perfect gift in imperfect times. And with the onset of America’s financial predicament—uncertainty seems to have motivated some changes in holiday patterns. According to an informal survey, more than 80 percent have trimmed their Christmas budgets in some way. This has not been the best of years financially especially for the many families this Christmas who are struggling with job losses, house foreclosures, car payments, and in too many cases credit card bills from last Christmas.

PRIDE AND GLORY: Pacman ends a Golden Era

(1 vote, average: 5.00 out of 5)

The ‘Golden Boy’ next door got his statue at the Staples Center last week. And then he took the buzz from Hollywood to Vegas to meet the ‘Pacman’ who would be ‘King Kong,’ so he told the press in jest. Just like the movie on his mind.

But it was not supposed to end that way. Somebody up there changed the script from ‘King Kong’ to ‘David and Goliath’ in the middle of the movie, scene 8 to be exact. And before the bell rang for scene 9, boxing had a new leading man in the ‘Pacman.’

The Changing of the Guard

The Changing of the Guard

LAS VEGAS – Have ever imagined in your wildest dreams that a Filipino could retire the great Golden Boy?

Of course, Oscar De La Hoya’s retirement is not official. But to many boxing experts, who witnessed the dismantling of De La Hoya ringside, the Golden Boy’s last fight was indeed Saturday night against the Pride of the Philippines Manny Pacquiao. The date December 6, 2008 should be etched on De La Hoya’s boxing gravestone.

MIAMI’S HIT: Fil-Am Erik Spoelstra brings the ball to his court

I’m very proud of my heritage and it’s always a special trip to come out here in the Bay Area and feel very comfortable with the support we’ve had,” said Miami Heat head coach, Erik Spoelstra, during an interview with the Asian Journal at the LA Sports Club in San Francisco.   At 38, he is also the youngest coach in the NBA – and he’s part Filipino.

Born in Evanston, Illinois to a Dutch-Irish father John Spoelstra, and Elisa Celino, a Filipina from San Pablo Laguna, Spoelstra grew up in Portland, Oregon where he played at Jesuit High School and University of Portland.  After graduating from college, he spent two years as a player and coach for TuS Herten, a German professional team.  His father was also an NBA executive for the Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets.
